Product information "Empirical Labs EL8S"

The Distressor EL8-S from Empirical Labs is a professional stereo compressor pair designed for studio and live applications. It delivers warm, vintage-inspired sound through a custom-designed gain control circuit, while offering a wide range of compression curves and flexible signal shaping.

All eight curves are distinctive, from the 1:1 mode that adds subtle harmonic warmth without compression, to the Nuke setting, a brick-wall limiter ideal for live drum room microphones. Certain curves use different circuitry, effectively acting as unique compressors, while the 10:1 Opto ratio employs separate detector circuitry to emulate classic light-controlled devices such as the LA-2A.

The Distressor also includes three signal-coloring modes, allowing harmonic distortion without compression. Distort 2 emphasizes tube-like 2nd-order harmonics, while Distort 3 highlights 3rd-order harmonics for a tape-like character. Two high-pass filters, one in the audio path and one in the detector path, help manage low-frequency energy that can cause pumping or breathing.

This stereo pair is factory-matched and includes cables for locking the units together, providing precise and reliable stereo operation.
